Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Pharmacology / Cardio & Renal / Heart Failure Drugs
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is an essential nutrient that is converted into FMN (flavin mononucleotide) and FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide) in the body. FMN is a component of complex I, while FAD is a component of complex II (succinate dehydrogenase) in the electron transport chain. Riboflavin deficiency can be caused by malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, liver disease, and gut malabsorption.
Deficiency in riboflavin may present with various symptoms, including stomatitis, angular cheilitis, glossitis, seborrheic dermatitis, keratitis, corneal vascularization, and normocytic normochromic anemia.
- “Rye B2ead” - Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
- FlaMiN’ hot reuben sandwich - Riboflavin → FMN (flavin mononucleotide)
- FAD energy bar - Riboflavin → FMN (flavin mononucleotide), FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide)
- “Escape the City” - FMN is part of complex I, while FAD is part of complex II (succinate dehydrogenase) of the electron transport chain
- Liquor bottles on counter - Malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, liver disease, and gut malabsorption may result in riboflavin deficiency
- Chopped liver - Malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, liver disease, and gut malabsorption may result in riboflavin deficiency
- Spilled egg salad - Malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, liver disease, and gut malabsorption may result in riboflavin deficiency
- Ketchup inside mouth + corners of lips - Riboflavin deficiency presents with stomatitis and angular cheilitis
- Big red tongue - Riboflavin deficiency may cause glossitis
- Applying rouge to face - Riboflavin deficiency may cause seborrheic dermatitis
- Cracked red glasses - Riboflavin deficiency may cause keratitis and corneal vascularization
- Falling red “H” - Riboflavin deficiency may cause normocytic normochromic anemia
